Repurposing a Lumia 950 XL as a dedicated rack monitor?

Hey everyone,

I haven't posted in the Windows Mobile section in ages, mostly because, well, the platform has been quiet for a long time. However, I was doing some deep cleaning in my office this weekend and unearthed my old Lumia 950 XL. I honestly forgot how good the polycarbonate build felt compared to the glass slabs we use today.

I didn't want to just toss it back in the drawer, so I had an idea for a repurposing project. I’ve been completely overhauling my home lab setup recently to handle some heavier data workloads. I just finished installing a new chassis and swapped in a heavy-duty 1600-watt power supply unit to support a couple of older enterprise GPUs I picked up. It’s a bit of a power-hungry beast, and I want to keep a very close eye on the real-time wattage draw and thermals without having to sit at the main terminal.

My thought was: Could I mount the Lumia directly onto the rack faceplate and keep it "always-on" as a dedicated status monitor? The OLED screen is still vibrant, and the high contrast of the Windows Mobile UI actually fits the server aesthetic really well.

My specific question for those still tinkering here is about browser compatibility in 2025. I know the app store is effectively gone, but if I’m just pointing the browser to a local web dashboard (like a simplified Grafana page), does the legacy Edge browser on Windows 10 Mobile still render basic CSS layouts correctly? I’m worried about it choking on modern scripts or throwing certificate errors even on a local network.

Has anyone here successfully used these old Windows handsets as simple IoT displays recently, or is the browser engine just too outdated to handle even a basic status page?

Thanks!
